Salvation Has Come

The night is far gone,
those moments that filled our hours,
faded, our drunken waste that bound our feet.

We must wake, wake, the herald has cried,
flee, fire, foes!      Salvation has come.
It is near, near, within our souls

No twilight ‘ere the morn
has beset us in riddles and fear.
No, we have seen the sun rise o’er the hills.

The day is at hand,
this time ne’er to fade again,
tho a battle crests and falls round us.

There shall be no return,
so we gird our flesh and bones
in this armor of adamant light.

And heralds we become as well
flee, fire, foes!      Salvation has come.
We turn from the curse

and revel in the day,
free, free from death’s bonds.
We wait our Master’s pleasure.

Men, seek no taste of our foul days.
Salvation is nearer now to us
than at its first bright peals.

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. — Romans 13:11-12

The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

Mark 13:37 “What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be on the alert!’”

1 Corinthians 7:29 But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none;

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

1 Corinthians 15:34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

Ephesians 5:14 For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

James 5:8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

1 Peter 4:7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

1 John 2:18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.

Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.

Revelation 22:10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

1 Corinthians 7:29 But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none;

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

2 Corinthians 6:7 in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left,

2 Corinthians 10:4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.

Ephesians 5:11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.

Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

1 John 2:8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.

The Artist Who Speaks

The Artist’s works deepen
the beauty deepens to beauty
the first audience seeks the second
and the final
God Himself
spoke and then
saw it was good
created His own audience
that He might revel
in the revelry in
response to His
own art

These things are ephemeral
that drive us to roar
in our place
before His sustainment
yet long for the day
when the final concert
the final gallery
is open for eternity
no longer annual
perennial
but eternal
in the Garden
recreated

It all remains
spans the scope
of time and space
begotten in His begetting
before everything
yet in a sort
of event horizon
came to a point
a shout, a roar
of finality
that seems like an ending
in the text
that opens up everything
into motion and view

As His son,
His Very Revelation
of Himself
with Himself
made our gallery
our beautiful gallery
and us within it
crying out at our wondrous frame
and our wondrous foil
our perilous fall
our precious restoration
to recall again our fearful making
that which we are
because of
and in
Him who is the most glorious
never made
ever being
revealed
for our pleasure
that is His pleasure.

She Delights Me

She delights me
To wake
Take breath
Light upon life

With her

Tho time tears down mountains
Brings paradise to dust
Bares all my infirmity
She surpasses
And I am delighted

With her

She begins
Moments
Thoughts
Touches

With me

Tho pride fells my honor
My faithfulness wanes
My love turns to abandon
She withstands
And I am delighted

With her

She brings
Peace here
Grace here
The rest

Of me
With her

There was no covenant when we joined.
God was not with us.
Then Christ came true
And changed everything.
Now when I fail
It’s not all done.
For He is delighted in me
And so I may delight in my beloved.

Now when she touches me, it’s a gift.
When she’s patient with me, it is God’s mercy.
Now when she speaks to me, it is grace.
When she forgives me, it’s perfect.

I’m so grateful, as only unworthy I am.
That she was given to me.
I would write this for her every day of my life.
But I’m too busy with me.
So I’ll repent every all the time.
And keep these for her when I don’t.

Yet You

With no wings
Yet flying true
You were with me
Told me I knew
What was me
What I knew

I knew
Thank you
I did not
Do not
Have to watch
To smile

Did not
See the bridges that
Might have been
Crumbling
With no wings
Yet flying, you flew

Right beside me
In love
In the fair blue
You showed me
Something true
I did not know I knew

Thank you
I did not
Do not
Have to see
The footprints
To remind me.

No Sacred Rest

Course the horizon
Dust in our memory

The setting sun
Shall burn through our rough robes

We speed in the wake
Of distance
The sand plumes

The whipping grass
A white sound
Whipping at our fleeing figures

We fly, we soar
Wind is nothing
We created it

We become it
It howls in rage
As we Burst through this trail

On our quickened souls
To nowhere
To everywhere

We see no water
No sacred rest

It is the pounding
The sifting dream
Of desert in our ride

The dunes
The ridge
Ghostlike

We pass them all
For this is the ride
The ride of lifetimes

You’ve seen it
You’ve seen us pass
Did you join us

In our flight
Our passion
Our departure

We sailed upon the seas of sand
We savored the hard sweat
The span of the world

We touched the horizon
We touched the depths of the depths
And we seek them again

Ride with us
Ride beside
This caravan fleet

This fiery wake
Of dust
Passion

Ride
Begin

Set Me Down

Drove this road
A thousand times
And never stopped
But I wanted to stop
Wanted to drop
My boot heel
In the dust right here

Where everything else
Is a hundred miles away

From that greasy joint
At the side of the road
Where they take your last buck
Just cause they got you
Just cause the Flyin’ J
Is a hundred miles away
Up past the horizon’s mirage

Silver all a shimmer
That never lets you stay

I still want to give ‘em
My only last dollar
For a dusty tin cup
Of black coffee
A bit of leaf for my briar
And watch the rest fly right by there
A hundred miles from anywhere

As they look for somethin’
I already found along my way

Left my heart in the dust
On a ribbon of a road to nowhere
You’ll still find my shadow there
Back broken, knees bent
Bent as my soul
That fell seven years ago
Into a cool well at a secret spring

Under a crooked cross on a holy dune
A million miles away

Look in my hands
See this dust
Take my bones
These lonely bones
And cover them up
With this

Don’t play me a dirge
Let the heat waves shimmer-dance
On my bones
On these sticks and groans
Just let the wind fiddle
A lonely tune round the cholla
On my bones

On these lonely bones
Just let the desert play

There’s a burnt ravine
Tween Hatch
And the brass of the Tucson sky
Out in the saddle-sore gulches
And wind-beaten scrub so dry
When I get too old
Take me on that long road

Till I can’t walk no more
Then set me down

On a hot rock
Under the old creosote
With the lizards and cicadas
The sun burnin’ my jeans up
My lips chapped, crinkled as a crone
As these crows’ feet in a squint
Let me taste that coppery dust

One last time let me just
Breathe it into these bones

Let my last sight be
A dust devil dancin’
Those darned quail a-skitterin’
And the mourning doves
Up on the lines above
Serenadin’ me
In peace while I lay

In the grit of a forgotten wash
A hundred miles away

At high noon
When the sun is blazin’
Burnin’ up the long long sands
Put my sweet girls in my hands
Put your cool kiss on my cheek
Don’t cry, I wanted it this way
And leave me here to stay

So far from anywhere.
A hundred miles away

Some sort of Desert Opus kind of song.
A lot of images wrapped together.
I hope to make it sing-able.
It’s written for the miles of endless desert
and that’s the view behind the words.
That and the hope after the desert.

We Are One

The room has stopped
spinning

We have again
our breath

And the silence
Of a cathedral

Humbling, resounding
Fills our souls

We weep, soundless
we two

Weeping in sweet
glory

Glory you made
in us
For You

And the silence
Of this cathedral

Humbling, calling
Fills our souls

For a moment
mystics

Just as mystics
should be

Silenced in your raiment
Wrapped in your gift

Perfect
As our tears

Slip down together
To join
Into one

Our joy

Our passion

Thank you

Waterborne

Up, up past the ridge of vision
The line of sight at the bronze edge of the world
Little moments, little words I find to savor

Fountain in this secret grotto
where I come to whisper
Where songs find beginning
in little words and dreams

Waterborne Ivy making these walls so sweet smelling and alive
O the seed that was such tiny hope
worked into the cracks, holding so much together
Alive and green and everywhere so fine

Stream, breathing noise that never ends
the life grown up and around over all these years
Rain that ends all days in soft darkness
wrapped in peace

Bring little moments to my senses
speak of paradise amidst the dust and burn
my little kingdom of dunes and crags,
of sun and wind-swept emptiness.

In the desert our water-spoiled senses seem to come to life.  Days can go by without a scent of water or clean, moist earth.  Shade under a desert tree that’s recently had fill of rain is completely different from that of a building or overhanging stones.  The scent of water in the desert is not easily explained without some sort of poetic sense.  It’s like breathing life.  It is coolness and a refreshing that has a physical impact.  Sometimes I feel like I can touch it, maybe even see it, that shimmering sense of wellness in a place that appears dry and dead.  I love this in my desert.

You are my sense of life in this little desert-mind.  That essential water that, though beautiful and wonderful anywhere in the world, is far more in the corners of desolation, distance and endless days.  The sky may be filled with dreams, but the life is found here, here at the way-station, the shimmering oasis of this one’s visions.

Justified

O, what is this?
O, what have you done?
O, what you have done

Like the fellow who hung
There just beside you
Lived his whole life
Perishing, perishing

Who, in a moment
Heard your Spirit
His foot in a grave
And you snatched him from it
Alive, alive

We want this paradise
Like you promised him
Didn’t thank you
For making him good
You made him live

He cried to you
like the poor wretch there
There by the priest
He knew only you
Dead and Risen

You died and rose
You are the root
You are our fount
The one who died
The one who rose

Raise our cups
In Christ, you
For you alone
Are our redemption
And our perfection
Your glory

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Winds On Our Anniversary

It has been so long
since the wind has blown
across our path
as we stood side by side
in the fields

Five long years
of laughter and tears
in our house
sitting side by side
and apart

Have not rendered us
from living as us
together
in heart and soul
together

May you remember well
as I do
these dreams of light
that may yet in our time
come true

Keep hope in you
keep faith in me
keep well its symbol
that is our fair ones
the part that is already true

I will touch you
once again, Love
as winds blow
across our path
dream of me.
